The Body’s Energy Systems

Traditional healers all over the world recognize different aspects of the body’s energy field. Here is an overview of three: the chakras, meridians and acupoints, and aura.

Traditional healers all over the world recognize different aspects of the body’s energy field. Some of these have been corroborated by scientific studies, while others have yet to be scientifically measured and mapped out. All are available for you to explore in your own embodied experience, as millions of others have done since time began.

Chakras

Chakras are centres of energy along the mid-line of the body, from the base of the torso to the crown of the head. There are seven main chakras, with many different traditions proposing other minor chakras. These energy centres relate to physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

For example, the heart centre (anahata chakra in the Indian tradition, or middle dan tian in the Chinese tradition) is associated with the physical heart as well as being a centre of emotions. Spiritually it involves compassion and unconditional love and healing. Studies by the HeartMath Institute have measured the heart’s electromagnetic field using an electrocardiogram (ECG) and found that the heart’s field is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the electrical activity generated by the brain.[1]

We can connect with the chakras using our intention, our hands, crystals, body movements such as qigong or yoga, and reiki healing.

How can we balance the chakras?
The easiest way is to place your hands on one or two chakras, relax and breathe. Feel the warmth of your hands on your body and allow the warmth to spread deep into your body. Heart-Focused Breathing (from the HearthMath method) is a way to tune into and balance your heart centre.

Meridians and Acupoints

Fourteen main channels or pathways of energy run through the body, from the legs and arms up to the torso and face, and in the opposite direction. Along each of these are points which can be stimulated using needles (in acupuncture) or with massage or tapping (in acupressure or EFT tapping) to balance the body and promote healing.

Research has shown that acupuncture points exhibit distinct electrical characteristics, such as lower electrical resistance compared to the surrounding skin.[1] This phenomenon is thought to be due to the higher concentration of nerve endings, blood vessels, and other cellular structures at these points.[2]

The concept of meridians and acupoints comes from ancient Chinese traditions. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system, for example, the Lung meridian runs from the chest down to each arm and thumb. Balancing the Lung meridian not only helps the physical lungs but also relates more broadly to the body’s immune system, skin, and also emotional aspects such as grief and sorrow.

How can we balance the meridians?
Tapping is a great way to release stuck energy, stimulate and balance the meridians. In the EFT tapping sequence we cover all fourteen main meridians.

The Aura

The aura is an energy field that surrounds our bodies. It is believed to include an electromagnetic aspect, as well as more subtle energies that have not been conclusively measured scientifically. In many traditions there are different layers in the aura at different distances from the body, such as a layer close to the body which is to do with physical health, and more outer layers involving thoughts, emotions and interconnectedness with others.

Kirlian photography has been used to capture images of some of the electrical energy surrounding people, although the images do not fully depict what has traditionally been sensed or seen as the human aura.

How can we balance the aura?
Movements such as qigong, walking barefoot in nature, meditation, chanting or gong baths, reducing our exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and using clear quartz or rose quartz crystals can help to keep the aura healthy and balanced.

When we work with the different energy systems of our bodies we can optimize our health and well-being. All of the body’s energy systems function better when we drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, eat the right amount of nutritious food, don’t deplete our energy. Visualisation can also be a powerful tool to positively affect our body’s energy.
